College/Department Salary Policies

Below is a list of College/Department salary requirements when including effort for faculty/staff on sponsored projects. If you have questions about a specific unit's policies, please contact the SPROUT representative listed on the Roster page. If something on this page needs updating, please contract Tyler Tulloch

  • College of Business
    • Requires 5% effort during the AY
  • College of Education  
    • Summer salary dollars cannot exceed AY salary dollars.
  • College of Communication Arts 
    • Does not currently have a requirement for AY effort on proposals but this is being discussed 
  • College of Natural Science 
    • Physiology - a PI or Co-PD/PI must include 1 month AY salary/year on federal grants or on foundation grants >$100,000. They require permission from the Chair/Nick Bourland/John Eynon not to include this. 
    • Microbiology & Molecular Genetics  - a PI or Co-PD/PI must include AY effort on a grant, based on their appointment in MMG and based on the annual direct costs, as indicated below. They require permission from Dr. DiRita or Coreena Spitzley not to include this.
      • Annual direct costs > $200,000:  100% appointment is required to request 1 AY month (prorated based on percentage of MMG appointment).
      • Annual direct costs between >$100,000-$200,000: 0.5 AY month (prorated based on percentage of MMG appointment).
      • Annual direct costs $50,000-$100,000:  0.25 AY month (prorated based on percentage of MMG appointment).
    • Biochemistry & Molecular Biology  
      • Doesn’t required AY effort on a specific proposal, however, they “assess” a 5% AY amount that the faculty need to provide to the department each year.  
  • College of Engineering  
    • No AY effort requirement  
  • College of Ag & Natural Resources  
    • No AY effort requirement 
  • MSU Extension
    • Applies to Extension Program Instructors, Program Coordinators, Educators, Specialists, District Directors, and Institute Directors (all AN appointments).
    • Does not apply to faculty with Extension appointments in academic units.
    • If salary can be included and match is required:  
      • Extension requires that the cost to sponsor amount be 2x the amount of cost share due to the limited availability of unrestricted dollars. For example, if effort is planned at 6% for an Extension Specialist and cost share/match is required, only 2% of the effort could be cost shared/matched.
    • If salary can be included and match is not required:
      • Effort should be fully funded.
    • Extension personnel must have prior approval from their Institute Director or Associate Institute Director. Feel free to contact MSUE.GrantServices@campusad.msu.edu to help facilitate.
  • College of Arts and Letters
    • ???
  • College of Human Medicine
    • Equal % effort for AY and Summer. If PI would like to budget higher % effort in summer, chair approval required.
  • International Studies and Programs
    • ???
  • James Madison College
    • No firm effort requirement. Each proposal must be discussed with the Associate Dean for Research.
  • College of Law
    • ???
  • Lyman Briggs College
    • ???
  • College of Music
    • ???
  • College of Nursing
    • Equal % effort for AY and Summer. If PI would like to budget higher % effort in summer, chair approval required.
  • College of Osteopathic Medicine
    • Equal % effort for AY and Summer. If PI would like to budget higher % effort in summer, chair approval required.
  • Residential College in the Arts and Humanities
